This was shown at the Royal Cinema (Faversham) between Jan 8th (Friday) to Jan 14th (Thursday) 2010
The movie is about a planet (actually it is a moon orbiting around a much larger planet) called Pandora which is inhabited by tall, blue, humanoid aliens called Na'vi.
The Na'vi live in perfect harmony with the planet and can link their minds to some of the other creatures including a few which resemble dragons, which they ride on. Their technology consists of mainly bows and arrows.
The visiting humans are really there to mine the planet for its minerals but need to try negotiations with the aliens first so they create avatars (human minds linked to na'vi 'grown' in a lab from a mix of human and alien DNA) to mix in with them in an effort to understand them. Eventually negotiations fail so the humans move in with troops and helicopter gunships.
The battle that follows is one of the most amazing dog-fights between helicopter gunships and dragons !!
Well worth a watch, especially in 3D

I thought this was an amazing film (I saw it twice in 2D) and I can't wait for the sequel.
But its a bit like what we are doing now on this planet - moving into an area, stripping out natural resources with little thought to the consequences.

Avatar 2: Hybrids - Suggested sequel.
21 years from last film. The na'vi still have not forgiven the humans for attacking their world and still don't feel like they can trust them.
Jake Sully has children from his Na'vi partner Neytiri, but they are partly human due to Jake being party human.
A few million humans have formed a colony on Pandora but still need to breath an Earth like atmosphere so they live in large glass bubbles with self-sustaining ecosystems. Some of them visit the place where the home-tree was destroyed (in Avatar-1) and some weep. Many attempt to live like the Na'vi.
The humans try to teach the Na've about things like how to make metal, steel, etc but the Na'vi are stuck in their ways and seem totally against any from of technology. However there are some things the Na'vi are really interested in; music, art and marshal arts.
Grace, although dead, has her conscious mind in the Tree Of Souls. Jake is able to talk to Grace via the Tree Of Souls and learns :-
1.The Na'vi weren't always so primitive, they were quite advanced many thousands of years ago but lost it many centuries ago.
2.The bio-network of trees is actually a communications and defence system built by the ancient Na'vi and Grace can access it.
3.That network has detected some alien 'chatter' in the local solar system indicating some kind of land-grab / invasion.
And so the race begins. Jake needs to get the Na'vi up to speed on some form of technology and prepare them for yet another invasion. The only ones capable of operating the defence network are human/Na'vi hybrids and they need to be taught - fast.

The actors in the film were scanned using 3D Laser Scanning hardware ... in case anyone was wondering !
